Project Overview

The Treehouse was a night club operating in Charleston, SC from 1991 to 1995. During its time on historic King Street, the Treehouse served as a gathering spot for the straight and LGBTQ community alike. With it’s come-one-come-all attitude, the club has made a lasting impression on all those searching for a sense of belonging in the Charleston community.

Unfortunately, the Treehouse and most paper records documenting its existence were lost in a fire. Through this project, we interviewed frequent patrons, or 'fixtures' as they lovingly call themselves, to piece together the legacy of the club. Additionally, we interviewed current members of Charleston's LGBTQ+ night scene to investigate how far the community has come in terms of acceptance. By commemorating the club from a historical viewpoint, we hope to show family and home are two concepts open to interpretation. Basically, you can’t choose your birth family, but you can choose where you feel most at home.
